  1. 1856-1915. Scottish socialist, member of
  2. Parliament 1892-95 and 1900-15. He worked in
  3. the mines as a boy and in 1886 became
  4. secretary of the Scottish Miners' Federation.
  5. In 1888 he was the first Labour candidate to
  6. stand for Parliament; he entered Parliament
  7. independently as a Labour member in 1892 and
  8. was a chief founder of the Independent Labour
  9. Party in 1893. Hardie was born in Lanarkshire
  10. but represented the parliamentary
  11. constituencies of West Ham, London, 1892-95
  12. and Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, from 1900. A
  13. pacifist, he strongly opposed the Boer War,
  14. and his idealism in his work for socialism
  15. and the unemployed made him a popular hero.
